This Year’s Unique ‘Canation’: How Pet Culture is Redefining Parents’ Day in Asia

I received another DM today. Let’s open the first one. ▶ A changing Mother’s Day: “dog-nation” replaces carnations Today is Mother’s Day. Red carnations have filled the streets, but this year a playful trend is getting attention: the “dog-nation.” A wide-eyed, irresistibly cute dog wore a red carnation headband — a pet-sized carnation that’s become popular online. The image of a dog that almost looks like the flower itself brings an easy smile. With roughly 15 million pet owners, Mother’s Day customs are naturally shifting to include pets. Pet-focused Mother’s Day items go beyond the dog-nation. One trend is a “filial delivery” costume: a dog wears a delivery-worker outfit and headband while holding a package. Sales of pet gifts for Mother’s Day have doubled compared with the same period last year, and dog daycares are staging events that let owners celebrate with their pets. Many owners call their animals family. Since Mother’s Day is about family, it makes sense that celebrating the holiday with pets is spreading. ▶ Lee Su-ji parodies the “difficult patient” — viral again Now for the second DM. Comedian Lee Su-ji, who previously went viral for parodying kindergarten teachers, turned her attention to hospitals. Her reality-based sketch drew strong reactions from medical staff. In the clip, she plays a “difficult patient” you might see in a ward — one of her alter egos, a woman in her 60s named Hwang Jeong-ja. If mealtime runs late, she snaps, “Hey, nurse — where’s the food?” She speaks bluntly, shouts across the room, bickers about side dishes and medical bills, and even pressures nurses to summon her son. Medical workers responded, “We see that patient every day,” and some said the sketch reminded them of real encounters so vividly it triggered PTSD-like feelings. Lee Su-ji’s meticulous reenactment again won empathy from healthcare professionals. Beyond the laughs, her work highlights the emotional labor and difficult realities on the wards — a message worth reflecting on. ▶ Trump unveils 6-meter gold statue of himself: “This is the real one” Last DM: One image strongly associated with former President Trump is his clenched fist. Now a gold statue capturing that pose — nearly 6 meters (about 19.7 feet) tall — has been erected. The statue stands at Trump’s privately owned golf resort in Miami, Florida. Reports say it cost more than 500 million KRW (about $375,000) to make. The clenched-fist pose echoed a 2024 campaign moment that rallied his supporters: he raised his fist even amid the shock of nearby gunfire, drawing thunderous cheers that helped solidify his base. Trump boasted about the statue on social media and thanked donors who funded it as “great American patriots.” Critics called the monument overly political and likened it to the self-aggrandizement seen in authoritarian regimes. The resort is scheduled to host the G20 summit this December, which may intensify the controversy. From commemorative coins and passports to statues, images of Trump are cropping up across the U.S., fueling renewed debate over his self-promotion. That’s my reply to today’s DMs. It’s Mother’s Day — this year the dog-nation is giving the traditional red carnation a run for its money. Times change, and people find new ways to show love to family, but the heart of Mother’s Day remains the same: remembering parents’ sacrifices and expressing gratitude. Thank you, and I love you. Today, put aside your shyness and give your parents a hug. That’s DM for today. Yonhap News TV inquiries and tips: KakaoTalk/Line jebo23 Jin Ki-hoon (jinkh@yna.co.kr)
