Translation result[게티이미지뱅크] [Herald Economy=Reporter Kim Juri] A new survey found that Koreans in their 20s and 30s typically spend 50,000–100,000 KRW (approximately $37.50–$75.00) on a single date. Women were twice as likely as men to say financial pressure led them to end a relationship.

On May 13, Enlize, the operator of the social dating app Wippy, released the results of a survey on how men and women perceive dating costs. The company polled 1,485 Wippy members in their 20s and 30s.

When asked about the usual cost of a single date, the most common answer for both men and women was 50,000–100,000 KRW (approximately $37.50–$75.00). Some 52.5% of men and 52.7% of women selected that range.

Asked what they considered an “affordable” date, 42% of men and 39.1% of women said 30,000–50,000 KRW (approximately $22.50–$37.50), making it the top response for both groups.

The survey also showed women feel greater strain from dating expenses. While 29.5% of men said they had given up on dating because of costs, 38.6% of women said the same. And 8.6% of men versus 17.9% of women reported actually breaking up with a partner to reduce financial burden.

Men and women differed on preferred bill-splitting methods. Only 11.2% of men and 5.4% of women favored splitting the total bill evenly. Men most often preferred paying flexibly depending on the situation (40%), while the top choice for women was alternating who pays by outing or venue (40.8%).

Lee Jeong-hoon, head of Wippy’s marketing team, said, “Dating costs were traditionally seen as primarily a male issue, but today women in their 20s and 30s are reporting substantial financial and emotional strain in sustaining relationships.”
