If the rainy season always leaves your laundry smelling musty, you’re not the only one.

What’s more surprising than someone else’s odor on the morning subway… is the smell coming from your own clothes.

👉 When the rainy season makes your laundry smell, here’s a concise guide—from causes to fixes to help you tackle it.

Do just one of the methods below correctly, and you can keep your clothes fresh all summer!

1. Start by cleaning your washing machine

Most laundry odor problems start inside the washing machine.

Rubber gaskets, the detergent drawer and the lint trap readily collect mold and detergent residue, making them common odor sources.

  • Rubber gasket & detergent drawer: scrub into the corners with an old toothbrush.

  • Lint trap: place a towel underneath, open it, and clean with a toothbrush and baking soda.

  • Drum: add 500g of sodium percarbonate (or use bleach), fill with hot water, and run the tub-clean cycle.

2. Dry wet clothes before washing

Have you ever put rain-soaked clothes into the washer while they were still damp?

Left damp, clothes become breeding grounds for bacteria and odors.

  • Either dry wet clothes before washing, or wash them immediately.

  • If you leave them too long, even your favorite garments can develop a moldy smell!

3. If boiling isn’t possible, try the microwave

Can’t boil items in a large pot? You can disinfect some items in the microwave.

  • Wet the smelly item and microwave it for 30 seconds to one minute.

  • But be cautious: if it’s not thoroughly wet, there’s a risk of fire ⚠️

4. Use baking soda & vinegar

Summer’s musty smells often won’t come out with detergent alone.

Try a natural deodorizer combo to lift lingering odors.

  • Use detergent + baking soda in a 1:1 ratio.

  • Add a few drops of vinegar during the rinse cycle to neutralize odors.

5. Put newspaper between items?

When your drying rack is packed during the rainy season, poor airflow can make odors worse.

In that situation, tucking newspaper between items helps absorb moisture and reduce dampness.

  • Hang clothes in a zigzag pattern and slip newspaper between them.

  • On very humid days, place newspaper under the laundry as well.

✅ Wrap-up: Don’t let the rainy season steal your confidence — keep your laundry fresh and dry!

Do any one of these properly, and you won’t have to worry about awkward looks on the subway.

Enjoy a pleasantly scented day, even during the rainy season.
