Stop Doing This: 5 Common Driving Habits Killing Your Car

Repeated Hard Acceleration and Braking

Drivers often accelerate and brake abruptly without thinking, and those habits put significant strain on a vehicle’s engine and braking system.
Hard launches can cause incomplete fuel combustion, leaving carbon deposits inside the engine that reduce efficiency and accelerate wear.
Sudden, heavy braking quickens wear on brake pads and rotors and adds stress to drivetrain components, shortening their service life.

Not Using the Parking Brake When Parked

Many drivers rely solely on the Park (P) gear and skip the parking brake after stopping.
That leaves the transmission’s parking pawl and internal gears under constant load, increasing premature wear and the risk of failure.
Always set the parking brake when parked to protect the transmission.

Driving Off Immediately After Starting the Engine

Taking off before the engine reaches operating temperature increases friction and wear on internal components.
In cold weather, engine oil thickens and does not circulate as effectively, reducing lubrication.
Allow the engine to warm for at least 30 seconds after starting, then accelerate gently to help extend engine life.

Running the Tank Nearly Empty

Sediment collects at the bottom of the fuel tank, so running the tank nearly dry can draw contaminants into the fuel filter and pump.
That can reduce engine power, cause fuel delivery problems, and in severe cases lead to significant engine damage.
It’s best to keep a safe reserve of fuel when you refuel.

Overusing Brakes on Downhills

On long downgrades, relying only on the brakes instead of using engine braking can overheat the brakes and cause brake fade (vapor lock).
That sharply reduces stopping power and accelerates wear on pads and rotors.
Use a lower gear to apply engine braking when descending long hills.

Everyday driving habits across varied road conditions quietly erode a car’s durability and shorten its lifespan.
Correcting five common habits—abrupt acceleration and braking, skipping the parking brake, inadequate warm-up, running the tank nearly dry, and overusing brakes on downgrades—can noticeably extend a vehicle’s life.
Drivers should adopt sound driving habits and schedule regular inspections to keep their cars safe and on the road longer.
