A meme that comes to mind every summer (Source: Infinite Challenge)

When daytime highs rise well above 86°F (30°C) and your electric bill is a bigger concern than the heat, pay attention.

These air-conditioner energy-saving tips will help you stay comfortably cool this summer without the sticker shock.

1. Fixed-speed vs. inverter ACs — use them differently

•    Fixed-speed (non-inverter) AC

: With fixed-speed units, it’s more energy-efficient to turn the unit off once the room cools and turn it back on when it warms up again.

→ Start by setting the thermostat about 4–5°F (2–3°C) below your intended temperature and use high-fan mode to bring the room down quickly.

•    Inverter AC

: Most models sold since 2011 use inverter technology.

→ Once they reach the set temperature, they switch to a low-power mode. Leaving them running uses less energy than repeatedly turning them off and on.

2. Start on high, then switch to low fan

Begin on high-fan mode so the unit reaches the set temperature quickly.

After the space cools, switch to low-fan to reduce electricity use.

✅ Recommended temperature: 75–79°F (24–26°C)

✅ Keep the indoor–outdoor temperature difference within about 9°F (5°C)

3. Ventilate the room before turning on the AC

Turning the AC on while a room is still full of hot air lowers cooling efficiency and increases power use.

→ Open windows briefly to let hot air escape before starting the unit.

4. Use a fan or circulator with the AC

Running a fan or air circulator with your AC spreads cool air faster and improves overall cooling performance.

Fans consume roughly 40–50 times less electricity than an air conditioner, so using them together is a cost-effective approach!
