Removing Musty Towel Odor

The musty smell that clings to towels is a common summer nuisance. Even after multiple washes, the odor can linger. Here are three simple, at-home methods to eliminate that smell using ingredients you likely already have.

1. Use Vinegar

Do you use fabric softener when washing towels? Fabric softener can leave residue and promote lint and pilling, reducing a towel’s absorbency. A better option is to use plain white vinegar.

Vinegar helps break down residues and neutralize the musty odors trapped in fibers.

Two easy approaches: First, soak towels in a basin of warm water with one cup of vinegar for about an hour before washing. Then launder as usual—the musty smell should be gone.

The second approach is to add vinegar during the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener. The amount varies with the load, but use about two-thirds of a soju cup per load.

After washing, dry towels immediately and thoroughly—prompt drying prevents odors from returning.

2. Use Oxygen Bleach (Sodium Percarbonate)

Oxygen bleach is effective at disinfecting and removing persistent odors. It can neutralize the bacteria and buildup that cause mustiness.

In a basin, dissolve oxygen bleach at a ratio of 3 g per 1 L of warm water. Warm the water to about 40°C so the powder dissolves. Add a small amount of detergent and stir. Open a window for ventilation while you work.

Soak the towels for about 30 minutes. Warning: oxygen bleach can cause colors to fade or run. Use white towels or colorfast items only, and wash them separately.

After 30 minutes, transfer the towels to the washing machine—avoid direct skin contact with the soaking solution. Run a normal cycle and dry thoroughly. You should notice the musty smell has been removed.

3. Use Baking Soda

This method is handy when only one or two towels smell. Fill a basin with warm water and submerge the smelly towel. Add about one tablespoon of baking soda. Let it absorb, then squeeze out the excess water.

Place the towel in a food-safe plastic bag and make a small vent to release steam. Microwave on high for about 3–5 minutes. The heat helps kill odor-causing bacteria much like boiling.

Because the towel will be very hot after microwaving, wear heat-resistant gloves and rinse it several times in cold water. Wring it out and dry thoroughly.

These are straightforward ways to tackle musty towel odor during summer months. Try the method that best fits your situation, and enjoy fresher towels. I hope these tips make everyday chores a little easier.
