Former Chungju City official turned YouTuber Kim Seon-tae is making waves in the digital world. His channel has amassed nearly 1 million subscribers in just 48 hours, prompting the emergence of impersonator accounts.

On March 3rd, Kim announced the launch of his YouTube channel “Kim Seon-tae,” signaling a fresh start in his career. By 3 p.m. on March 5th, the channel had surpassed 960,000 subscribers, quickly outpacing the official YouTube channel of his former employer, Chungju City. His debut video, a two-minute introduction titled “I’m Kim Seon-tae,” has already racked up over 5 million views.

The channel’s success has caught the attention of more than just subscribers. A flood of advertisers have rushed to court Kim, with companies from various sectors – including streaming platforms, food and beverage, apparel, logistics, education, beauty, and manufacturing – leaving witty comments. Even public institutions like the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the National Fire Agency, Incheon Airport, and the National Institute of Ecology have joined the fray, generating significant buzz.

However, Kim’s rapid rise has also led to some unwanted attention. On the morning of March 5th, he posted a screenshot of an X (formerly Twitter) account using his name and the handle @kimseontae_. Kim warned his followers, “This X account is an impersonator. Please be aware and don’t be misled.”

The impersonator had copied Kim’s profile picture and bio, claiming to “promote everything in the world” – a direct imitation of Kim’s YouTube persona. The account has since become inaccessible, likely deleted after being exposed.

Kim’s journey in the public sector was anything but ordinary. After passing the national civil service exam in 2016, he began his career in his hometown of Chungju. At the mayor’s suggestion, he ventured into YouTube content creation, quickly climbing the ranks. His meteoric rise from Grade 7 administrative officer in 2021 to Grade 6 local administrative officer within just three years was unprecedented in a system that typically prioritizes seniority.

Rather than resting on his laurels, Kim chose to bet on change. Just before the Lunar New Year holidays last month, he submitted his resignation, stepping down from his position as head of the New Media team in Chungju City Hall’s public relations office to return to civilian life.

Kim bid farewell to his subscribers with a video titled “Final Farewell.” In his characteristically calm manner, he expressed, “The seven years I spent with you were the happiest of my life. Please continue to support Chungju.” Following his departure, Chungju City’s YouTube channel saw a dramatic drop in subscribers, plummeting from 970,000 to 770,000.

While Kim likely deliberated his decision carefully, the announcement caught many followers off guard. Speculation ran rampant, with some suggesting he was launching a political career, others claiming he quit due to Mayor Jo Gil-hyung’s resignation, and some even spreading rumors of workplace jealousy. None of these claims were substantiated.

In response, Kim addressed the rumors head-on. He firmly denied reports of internal conflict or ostracism, stating, “I want to make it clear that the allegations of isolation and internal discord are completely false. My resignation was a personal decision made after careful consideration of my goals and future challenges. It deeply saddens me to see my colleagues at Chungju being attacked and public servants criticized based on unfounded speculation.”

The buzz surrounding Kim only underscores his widespread appeal. His decision to leave a secure government position and embark on a new journey in his 40s has inspired many. As companies and institutions clamor to work with the man who “promotes everything,” all eyes are on Kim’s next move in this exciting new chapter of his career.
