[Sports Today reporter Jeong Ye-won] On his first day as a permanent cast member of Hangout With Yoo, Heo Kyung-hwan became the target of an AI’s ruthless roast — and viewers loved it.
The March 14 episode of MBC’s variety show, themed “A Day With AI,” aimed to shake up Kim Kwang-kyu’s monotonous routine. Yoo Jae-suk, Haha, Heo Kyung-hwan and Joo Woo-jae spent a day following the AI’s prompts alongside Kim, showing off solid chemistry. According to Nielsen Korea, the program posted a 4.9% household rating in the Seoul metropolitan area, ranking first among Saturday variety shows in its time slot.
After Heo formally bowed to thank viewers and accepted congratulations from the cast as the show’s newest regular, the AI immediately zeroed in on him. When it learned Heo had joined the lineup, the AI quipped, “Why is that guy even there? Tell him to at least wipe the sweat from his philtrum,” directing its harshest barbs solely at Heo. Flustered, Heo shot back, “Get out here!” — triggering a burst of laughter.
The AI also took aim at Kim Kwang-kyu’s daily schedule, offering blunt assessments: it called Kim “the poster child for lifelong longevity” and joked that his meals looked like “nursing-home fare,” comments that visibly ruffled Kim. Noting that Kim often goes window-shopping alone, the AI suggested a group uniform-shopping trip and surprisingly tapped Yoo Jae-suk as the coordinator, adding, “If Jae-suk styles them, no one will complain,” a shrewd observation that delighted the cast.
Despite protests from his fellow members, Yoo stuck to his fashion convictions and put together the group look: a cardigan, shirt and gray sweatpants — the unmistakable “Jae-suk style.” Haha grumbled that it was “a Yoo Jae-suk cosplay,” Heo joked that they looked like quintuplets, and Yoo quipped that he felt like his “Zayn Malik abs” were showing, clearly pleased with the “Five Jae-suk” ensemble.
At the Korean restaurant the AI had recommended, the banter continued. The AI again poked at Heo — “Heo is a regular now? Why?” — prompting Yoo to urge reconciliation between the two. The AI didn’t relent, following up mid-conversation with, “Wait, what was that about Heo becoming a regular? Why is Heo even part of this?” and keeping the audience in stitches with its consistent Heo-centric jabs. When Haha recalled meeting singer Lee Moon-se at a public bath as a child, the AI teased, “Even hip-hop warrior Haha shrinks in front of the bathhouse,” which riled him up.
The AI’s next recommendation was a walk in the park. Kim, who enjoys walking barefoot, welcomed the idea. But when the AI requested an edit to a photo — changing three people in the picture to be barefoot — it selected Yoo Jae-suk, Heo Kyung-hwan and Joo Woo-jae. Reluctantly, the three who hadn’t planned to go ended up walking along the barefoot path Kim normally uses alone.
For the finale, the AI decided who would clock out. The cast asked the AI to erase someone in a photo to indicate who should leave first. The pick fell to Joo Woo-jae, who had been reluctant to call it a day. After Yoo, Heo and Haha left, the episode closed on a wistful note with Kim Kwang-kyu standing alone — a quietly poignant end to the AI-led day. The upgraded AI’s antics delivered fresh laughs and won viewers’ approval.
The preview for the next episode teased a segment titled “The Country Bumpkins’ Heyday,” stirring further anticipation. Hangout With Yoo airs Saturdays at 6:30 p.m.
