[Sports Today reporter Lim Si-ryeong] Lee Su-hyun, one half of sibling duo AKMU, opened up about a prolonged and painful slump.
The siblings Lee Chan-hyuk and Lee Su-hyun appeared on the April 1 episode of tvN’s variety show ‘You Quiz on the Block.’
On the program, Lee Su-hyun recalled telling the show about a slump five years earlier and said, \”It wasn’t just a slump in my career — I fell into a very deep slump in my life as well.\”
\”For a year I lived in anguish, waiting for my brother to finish his military service,\” she said. \”I thought his return would fix everything, but he charged ahead like a racehorse, focused straight ahead. As his artistic identity grew and he started pursuing his own projects, the joy of working together began to fade. People would tell us how we should make music, and I even told them I would give up AKMU. Singing and being onstage stopped bringing me joy. For about two years I lived like a hikikomori. I really felt like I had given up on my future.\”

Watching his sister, Lee Chan-hyuk said she seemed drained both before and after filming. \”I couldn’t force her to do anything,\” he said. \”It broke my heart.\”
Lee Su-hyun also admitted to turning to food to fill an emotional void. \”When I went on music shows, everyone looked so thin, so I always felt I had to lose weight. Food became what filled that emptiness, and I binge-ate every day. My whole body reacted. My self-esteem and confidence hit rock bottom and I couldn’t face people. I developed social anxiety and became afraid of people looking at me,\” she confessed.
With her brother’s support, she joined a group retreat and walked the Camino de Santiago. She said that experience helped pull her out of two years of isolation and overcome the slump. \”My brother is my savior,\” she said. \”He wants me to be happy not just now, but for the rest of my life. I want to live happily.\”
