[Sports Today reporter Song O-jeong] Kim Shin-young’s close bond with the late Jeon Yu-seong goes back to their college years. Kim studied comedy at university and trained under Jeon, developing into one of the leading talents in South Korea’s comedy scene. Their relationship — from teacher and student to senior and junior in the industry — has long been public, and the ways Kim has honored her mentor have touched many fans.

Last year at the MBC Entertainment Awards, Kim went onstage to accept a lifetime achievement award on Jeon’s behalf. She noted that she had been his student for 23 years and quipped that she wished he could have accepted it himself, joking that he always “bothers his students.” Even in the somber moment, she kept the audience smiling, presenting herself as a devoted disciple determined to carry on his legacy.

Since then, Kim has been publicly remembering Jeon on several occasions. On the April 4 broadcast of KBS2’s Immortal Songs, when Jo Hye-ryun performed a tribute to Jeon, Kim was visibly moved to tears. As the cast mourned together, she recalled Jeon’s final counsel: “Walk with people. Don’t go too far ahead. Don’t speak just because something comes to mind—go together. And learn the names of your seniors and juniors,” she said, passing along his wishes.

On her MBC FM4U radio show Noon’s Song of Hope, Kim said AKMU’s new song reminded her of Jeon and spoke fondly of their memories together. In a preview for MBC’s I Live Alone, she also revealed that one reason she finally broke free from a 13-year habit was something Jeon once told her. Through these moments, Kim continues to honor her mentor and keep his memory alive for the public.

At a previous awards ceremony, Kim cited Jeon’s teaching — “To make people laugh, you must laugh first” — and vowed to be “a disciple who begins with her own joy and then brings that joy to viewers and audiences.” With an upcoming episode of I Live Alone set to showcase a life shaped by her personal tastes, viewers are curious to see how Jeon’s lessons continue to influence her.
