An older customer who ordered a tart and an Americano sat with the food for a long time, sipping only the coffee while the tart remained untouched. After a pause — as if gathering courage — he finally took small, tentative bites of the unfamiliar dessert.

The camera lingered on him until the tart was gone. Viewers watched a person over 65 finish every last bite, and many found the simple moment unexpectedly moving.

The new variety show Bonjour Bakery is part of a recent wave of celebrity-driven “healing” programs centered on actors. The premise: a seniors-only café. Writer Kim Ran-ju, who worked on the show, said the idea came from watching her father light up while enjoying cake with his coffee.

Bonjour Bakery is billed as Korea’s first senior café. The production remodeled a closed supermarket in a village in Gochang, in North Jeolla Province, to create the space. Only customers aged 65 and older — plus companions — may enter. The desserts on offer match, in both looks and flavor, the highly photographed treats that usually trend on social media.

The standout desserts are made by actor Cha Seung-won, who takes on the role of pastry chef. Newcomer Lee Ki-taek serves as his assistant pastry chef. Veteran actress Kim Hee-ae manages the dining room, while actor Kim Seon-ho works behind the counter as the barista.

The first episode, which premiered on the 8th, offers a preview of how the four actors, local seniors from Gochang and visiting senior customers will interact at Bonjour Bakery. Cha concentrates on crafting desserts; Lee obsesses over the breakfast offerings; Kim Seon-ho shows up early to quietly clean the shop; and Kim Hee-ae gently chats with the seniors who gather around the bakery.

Between the actors’ low-key prep routines, the show occasionally cuts to the tranquil daily lives of Gochang’s residents. When the seniors finally relax and savor the bakery, viewers often feel a bit of that same calm.

The bakery’s full-scale operations are expected to get livelier next week. Though the experience comes later in life for some patrons, audiences are eager to see seniors try something new. Bonjour Bakery streams exclusively on Coupang Play every Friday at 4 p.m.
