[mdtoday = Reporter Ga-eul Lee] Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite is presenting her signature work, ‘Assembly Hall,’ to Korean audiences for the first time.

In a written interview on the 18th, Pite said the piece probes small conflicts and moments of solidarity within a community gathering in a North American town hall.

‘Assembly Hall’ uses dance to dramatize the internal strife and uncanny experiences of a club long known for staging medieval reenactments as it confronts its future. Pite said the work examines solidarity alongside opposing values. \”I wanted to show how essential—and at the same time fragile—the rules and democratic principles people construct to realize the ideal of community can be,\” she said.

Formally, the piece is notable for its use of spoken text. Playwright Jonathan Young contributed to the script, and the dancers translate the recorded lines’ breaths, intonations and pacing into precise physical detail. Pite described this choreographing of language as a way to sharpen the narrative and deepen engagement with the audience.

Pite added that language reshapes the dancers’ movement and enriches the audience’s experience. The performers even embody hesitations in the recorded text with precise physical gestures; Pite calls this a poetic act that constructs an image of aliveness through movement.

The production is performed by Kidd Pivot, the company Pite has led for more than 20 years. She said working with Kidd Pivot involves a denser, more layered structure than some collaborations and that the piece continues to evolve throughout the tour.

Addressing Korean audiences, Pite stressed the importance of solidarity through art. \”In a modern society full of forces that isolate us, people gathering to experience art together carries a deep resonance and can itself be an act of resistance,\” she said. She hopes the work will leave audiences with a message of love and hope.

‘Assembly Hall,’ which won last year’s Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, will run at Seoul’s LG Arts Center from the 5th to the 7th of next month.
