BTS, the South Korean pop group, reaffirmed its global influence after receiving state-level honors in Mexico City. Their agency, Big Hit Music, said the group accepted an official invitation from the Mexican president’s office on May 6 (local time) and held a meaningful, roughly 40-minute conversation with President Claudia Sheinbaum.

After the meeting, BTS members appeared with President Sheinbaum on the balcony of the National Palace, and the historic Zócalo was packed with ecstatic fans. Many ARMYs, overwhelmed by the surprise appearance, cheered through tears, and the excitement briefly brought traffic around the square to a standstill.

■ Economic impact tops roughly 155.7 billion KRW (about $107.5 million)… Mexican government issues ‘love call’ for additional shows

The group’s visit has generated economic value far beyond a cultural phenomenon. The Mexico City Chamber of Commerce estimates the concerts will produce an economic ripple effect of about 155.7 billion KRW (approximately $107.5 million).

With the third show selling out at lightning speed, pleas poured in from local fans who couldn’t secure tickets. President Sheinbaum reportedly took the unusual step of sending a letter through the foreign minister to the South Korean government to explore the possibility of additional performances — a move that quickly drew widespread attention.

BTS will continue meeting local fans with performances at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City on May 7 and May 9–10.
