[EPN Enpinau reporter Seo Hye-bin] BTS drew crowds to Mexico City’s presidential office and the Zócalo, sharing a special moment with local fans.

On May 6, the group met with President Claudia Sheinbaum at the presidential office. The visit, made at the president’s official invitation, lasted roughly 40 minutes and began at 4:50 p.m.

Sheinbaum told the members that Mexican fans had long awaited their performance. The government honored BTS as “distinguished visitors” and presented the group with a commemorative plaque.

The plaque cited BTS’s role in inspiring Mexican youth through music and in helping build communities grounded in respect, empathy, diversity and a culture of peace.

Later, the members joined the president on a balcony to greet citizens gathered in the Zócalo. About 50,000 people filled the square as BTS spoke in Spanish and engaged with fans.

The members said, “The energy is incredible. Thank you so much for your support.”

After the meeting, Sheinbaum wrote on her personal social media, “We were pleased to welcome the group most loved by Mexican youth. BTS’s music and the values they promote connect Mexico and South Korea.” She added that their music sends a positive message that encourages a culture of peace and inclusion.

Local outlets gave the event prominent coverage. Major publications such as El Universal, Milenio and Excélsior highlighted the meeting with the president, the balcony appearance and the crowd’s enthusiasm in the Zócalo.

BTS is scheduled to perform at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City on May 9 and 10. Both shows are sold out. The Mexico City Chamber of Commerce estimates the concerts will generate about $107.5 million, roughly ₩155.7 billion, in economic impact.
