Netflix unveiled the key things to watch ahead of the premiere of Girigo, a series about high school students who discover a wish‑granting app has cursed them with sudden death and then scramble to escape it.

This is Netflix’s first Korean YA (young-adult) horror series

The first talking point is the fresh genre twist Netflix delivers with its first Korean YA horror series. By centering the story on high school students caught in unpredictable situations, the show sharpens the anxiety and fear those characters feel. Teenagers’ wants and ambitions become the engine of Girigo’s horror, and the series heightens psychological tension by weaving those fears into conflicts over friendships, family, grades and identity.

The five friends bound to the Girigo app’s curse grew up together, but their relationships conceal complex emotions. Familiar schoolyard feelings—friendship, first love, envy, jealousy—are mixed with themes of curse, death and revenge, creating a fresh and unsettling take on teen horror.

New faces meet solid talent

The second point to watch is the pairing of a rookie director with a cast of emerging actors. Director Park Yun-seo makes her first major directorial debut with Girigo, and Netflix continues to position itself as a springboard for next‑generation creators. Rising talents Jeon So-young, Kang Mina, Baek Seon-ho, Hyun Woo-seok and Lee Hyo-je lead the cast; their bold performances are likely to draw attention. Having steadily built their résumés, these actors convincingly portray teenagers fighting desperately to escape the curse.

Park Yun-seo said, “When I read the script, the story felt so fresh that I thought working with new actors would be the best way to convey that freshness to viewers.”

Bold direction that immerses you in Girigo’s horror

The final highlight is the show’s daring, inventive direction, which delivers immersion beyond jump scares—at times it feels like stepping into a game. Girigo switches between real-world settings and cursed spaces to amplify suspense amid escalating chaos. Production design plays a central role: familiar, everyday locations such as schools are suddenly transformed into the stage for the curse.

The mysterious shrines of Haetsal and Bangul evoke an eerie, uncanny mood that departs from typical shrine imagery and piques curiosity. By varying its settings, Girigo builds vivid, visceral horror. Each episode ends by revealing new information about the app, layering twist upon twist and making the series hard to stop watching.

The YA horror series Girigo, generating buzz for its fresh take on the genre, premieres today (the 24th) on Netflix.
