A Chinese streaming platform popular in Korea has launched a project aimed at replacing actors with artificial intelligence. As debate intensifies, past comments from well-known actor Liu Yuning (36) have come back into focus.
iQIYI, one of the mainland’s four largest streaming platforms, announced on the 20th a project that uses AI to compile performers’ appearance, voice, acting and filmography data. The company said that, as the technology matures, AI could ultimately stand in for real actors.

iQIYI’s announcement — from one of the mainland’s four largest streaming platforms — touched off immediate controversy. The company plans to use a subsidiary’s AI program, Nadou Pro (納逗Pro), to build multimodal datasets for contracted performers and to cast their AI likenesses in actual productions. Critics responded with strong objections.
According to iQIYI, roughly 100 popular actors have joined the Nadou Pro multimodal data project, including Chen Zheyuan (29), Cheng Lei (32) and Zeng Shunxi (28). Reports also said Zhang Ruoyun (37) and Wang Churan (27) had signed on, but both denied those reports on social media.

Celebrities have pushed back as iQIYI’s plan threatens to upend casting, filming and other parts of the production process. In particular, observers have revisited remarks Liu Yuning made in an earlier interview.
When asked whether AI might take actors’ jobs, Liu acknowledged those concerns but said the current is unstoppable. \”Separate from jobs disappearing, the tide of the times cannot be stopped,\” he said, and added, \”No matter how unfair it feels, you shouldn’t cling to past glories.\” The comments have attracted renewed attention.
