[Sports Seoul | Reporter Lee Seung-rok] K-pop group BTS met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum at the presidential residence in Mexico City on the evening of the 6th (local time). The visit came at the president’s invitation. The meeting began at 4:50 p.m. and lasted roughly 40 minutes. Sheinbaum greeted the group, noting that many locals had long awaited their performance.

The Mexican government honored the band as Visitantes Distinguidos and presented a commemorative plaque recognizing how BTS has inspired Mexican youth through music and helped foster communities based on respect, empathy, diversity and peace.

That day, the seven members joined the president on a balcony to greet citizens gathered in the Zócalo. About 50,000 people packed the square and greeted BTS with roaring cheers. Speaking in Spanish, the members said they had missed Mexico and thanked fans, adding, “The energy is incredible. Thank you for your support.”

Afterward, President Sheinbaum posted on her personal social accounts that she was pleased to welcome “the group most loved by Mexican youth,” writing that BTS’s music and values bridge Mexico and South Korea and convey a positive message that promotes peace and inclusion.

Local media raced to cover the visit. Major dailies El Universal, Milenio and Excélsior ran prominent stories on the presidential meeting, the balcony appearance and the crowd at the Zócalo.

BTS is scheduled to begin a three-night run on the 7th, with additional shows on the 9th and 10th at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City. All three concerts sold out. The Mexico City Chamber of Commerce estimates the shows will generate about 155.7 billion KRW (about $116.78 million) in economic impact. roku@sportsseoul.com
