[TV Daily reporter Han Seoyul] Pop star Mariah Carey is embroiled in a lip-sync controversy.
On June 6 (local time), the opening ceremony for the 2026 Milan–Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics took place at San Siro Olympic Stadium in Milan, Italy. At the ceremony, Carey performed Domenico Modugno’s ‘Nel blu, dipinto di blu,’ singing the entire song in Italian. Immediately after the performance, audiences and several media outlets criticized her performance. The Daily Mail reported that Carey was mocked on social media for appearing to mime the song, noting she seemed not to push for her highest notes and that, at times, her lip movements lagged behind the stadium audio. Carey also drew attention for the jewelry she wore at the ceremony. International outlets estimated the combined value of her diamond necklace, earrings and bracelet at about 15 million USD (approximately 20 billion KRW).
