As January ushers in a wave of biting cold, the winter outerwear market is experiencing a late-season surge. Unlike the previous year, when milder temperatures in November and December dampened sales of down jackets and puffers, the January chill has reignited the demand for cozy outerwear.
Industry insiders report that during the crucial months of November and December last year, temperatures were on par with or slightly warmer than usual, leaving outerwear sales lukewarm at best.
But as the cold snap tightened its grip in January, shoppers started flocking back to stores, with a particular focus on high-performance down jackets and outdoor gear designed to combat the chill. Some outdoor brands, including K2, Black Yak, and Eider, have seen their January sales skyrocket. Even though many considered the winter shopping season over, the persistent cold has sparked a fresh wave of purchases and replacements.
This trend isn’t just talk – it’s reflected in the numbers at department stores too. A deep dive into winter outerwear sales at Lotte Department Store in Busan reveals a whopping 20% increase from February 2 to 25 compared to last year. It’s a significant jump, especially considering that sales growth in the early winter months of November and December only hovered around 10%. Clearly, January’s arctic blast has given outerwear sales the boost they needed.
With forecasts predicting more frosty days ahead, retailers are pulling out all the stops to keep the momentum going. They’re extending discounts and rolling out promotions to capture those last-minute winter shoppers. Lotte Department Store’s Busan branch is hosting a can’t-miss winter outerwear extravaganza in their basement level until the 29th, featuring a treasure trove of discounted goodies. Not to be outdone, Lotte Mall Dongbusan is keeping their winter outerwear deals hot through the end of the month.
