Adulting can be a drag, so more grown-ups are embracing playful, childlike vibes — and the kidult trend has quietly taken over fashion. \”Kidult,\” a blend of \”kid\” and \”adult,\” describes people who hang on to childhood feelings and nostalgia. What used to live mostly in toys, figures and collectibles now shows up on clothing, accessories and all kinds of fashion pieces.

The kidult audience spans late 20s to early 40s, and men and women tend to engage with the trend differently. Men often collect figures and limited-edition items, while women are more drawn to character-driven apparel, DIY kits and whimsical accessories.

Pleasure-seeking, nostalgia and the thrill of completing a collection have pushed kidult into the mainstream. Above all, it’s about fun and stress relief. The market, valued at 500 billion KRW in 2014 (approximately 375 million USD), is projected to grow to 11 trillion KRW (approximately 8.25 billion USD), and fashion’s embrace is accelerating that expansion.

BLACKPINK’s Jennie recently shared a post wearing a top printed with a character from the 1980s Korean animation \”Run, Hani.\” By styling it with chic accessories like a statement bag, she elevated the look and showed how kidult pieces can be sophisticated. Her use of bold colors and patterns transformed a simple character-print top into a trend-right wardrobe staple.

Singer HyunA frequently taps into kidult aesthetics and has become one of the trend’s fashion icons. Her playful, cute styling lets her express individuality while seamlessly weaving childlike charm into mature ensembles.

Kidult culture has evolved from a niche hobby into a broader social trend, and it shows no signs of slowing down. A kidult-themed exhibition in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province is open free through Feb. 22, 2025 — a perfect chance to experience and shop kidult items in person.
