[Herald Business = Reporter Min Seong-gi] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is stepping up its game to ensure your spring greens are safe to eat. From now until the 20th, they’re teaming up with local governments to conduct thorough inspections of popular springtime veggies, including the trendy bomdong cabbage and other favorites like shepherd’s purse and wild chives. Why the sudden interest in bomdong? Well, it’s all thanks to the bomdong bibimbap craze that’s been sweeping social media (social media). As this leafy green’s popularity skyrockets, officials are making sure it’s up to snuff. The inspection isn’t just limited to bomdong, though. They’re casting a wide net, collecting 340 samples of various spring greens from wholesale markets and online shops. The list includes shepherd’s purse, wild chives, bomdong, mugwort, stonecrop, sanchae (mountain vegetables), Aralia elata shoots, butterbur, water parsley, samphire, and deodeok root. They’re not messing around – these veggies will be put through the wringer, tested for pesticide residues, heavy metals, and other safety standards. Last year’s inspections turned up nine items that didn’t make the cut, exceeding pesticide residue limits. Those products were promptly destroyed, and the Ministry didn’t stop there. They launched educational campaigns for producers and sellers to prevent future slip-ups. A Ministry spokesperson reassured us, “We’re committed to keeping your plate safe. We’ll continue to monitor agricultural safety, taking into account consumer trends and seasonal demands. Our goal? Creating a food environment you can trust.” So, next time you’re whipping up that Instagram-worthy bomdong bibimbap, you can rest easy knowing your greens have been given the all-clear. Happy spring eating, everyone!
