Suseong University’s Department of Baking, Pastry and Coffee swept major awards at the country’s largest baking competition, proving once again that it’s a premier training ground for industry talent.

From the 16th to the 19th, the department competed in the Korea International Bakery Fair’s baking contest at COEX in Seoul and returned with six winners, including two gold medalists.

Major winners included: Gold — Yoo Ji-min (2nd year, general bread) and Sung Chae-eun (2nd year, nuts and cookies); Silver — Park So-hyun (1st year, marzipan cake); Bronze — Kang Seong-bo (2nd year, general bread), Kim Eun-su (2nd year, butter cake), and Lee Yu-rin (1st year, nuts and cookies).

Notably, the winners ranged evenly from first-year students to second-year students. Observers say the department’s structured hands-on curriculum helps raise skill levels across all years.

Alongside the competition, Suseong University ran a two-day “Top Company Visits and On-Site Tours” program on the 16th and 17th to sharpen students’ practical skills.

Students explored the COEX expo to experience global bakery trends and the latest techniques firsthand. On the 17th, they visited Seongsimdang in Daejeon—one of South Korea’s most celebrated bakeries—where a Seongsimdang representative delivered a special lecture on successful operations and the craftsman mindset essential for bakery professionals.

“I’m proud of our students for proving their skills at the nation’s most prestigious competition,” said Kim Sook-young, head of Suseong University’s Department of Baking, Pastry and Coffee. “We’ll continue to offer practical programs like the Seongsimdang visit and guest lectures so our graduates can step into the industry ready to perform, and we’ll keep supporting them every step of the way.”
