Choco Pies have become an unlikely survival snack in Vietnam after reports that a college student stranded in the mountains lasted 37 hours on Choco Pies and stream water.
Orion told reporters on the 26th that Nguyen Tuan (19), the student who went missing on Tam Dao in northern Vietnam, survived by eating Choco Pies until rescuers reached him.
The story spread across local media and online communities, with many joking, “Put Choco Pies in your survival kit.”
According to VNExpress, Tuan set out to climb Tam Dao with friends on the 19th but became separated from the group while descending and got lost. With no cellphone signal, he sheltered under a rock near a stream and survived on the Choco Pies he had and the water from the stream.
After a search that involved hundreds of police, military and local militia, rescuers found Tuan on the morning of the 21st, roughly 37 hours after he became lost. He was exhausted but in relatively good condition, and reports said he still had four Choco Pies left in his pocket.
Vietnamese consumers responded with remarks like, “The secret to survival is Choco Pie,” and “Small but packed with energy.”
Orion Vietnam visited Tuan during his recovery and presented him with strawberry Choco Pies, custard pies, Gosomi and Oh! Gamja snacks. Tuan reportedly said he already enjoyed Orion products and expressed his gratitude.
The episode also highlighted the symbolic place Choco Pies hold in Vietnam’s food culture.
Orion entered the Vietnamese market in 1995, and its Choco Pie now holds about 70% of Vietnam’s pie market. Last year, annual sales topped 130 billion KRW (97.5 million USD) for the first time, and cumulative sales have reached roughly 1.13 trillion KRW (847.5 million USD).
