The 23rd Jeongnamjin Jangheung Pen Shell Festival kicked off in triumph on the 1st at Sumun Port in Anyang-myeon, solidifying its place as a must-visit spring food festival.

The opening weekend drew roughly 10,000 visitors—locals and tourists alike—injecting the event with lively energy. The five-day festival runs through the 5th, showcasing seasonal pen shells from Jangheung’s pristine waters while aiming to boost the local economy and encourage seafood consumption.

Right from day one, crowds lined up to sample pen shell dishes. Hits like Jangheung sam-hap, grilled pen shell, sweet-and-sour pork, and hearty porridge were especially popular, reaffirming Jangheung’s reputation as a culinary hotspot.

Low in fat and high in protein, pen shells are packed with taurine and amino acids that can help ease fatigue and support liver function. They’re also rich in iron and vitamins, which may help prevent anemia and strengthen immunity—making them a standout healthy seafood choice.

This year’s festival isn’t just about eating—it’s an interactive cultural experience. Visitors can try pen shell shucking and preparation workshops, enjoy children’s cultural activities, and even take in a pen shell song contest. The mix of hands-on programs creates a welcoming festival atmosphere for all ages.

With Family Month underway, the event has become a popular family outing. Laughter from families enjoying activities and performances fills the grounds, adding to the festival’s vibrant spring vibe.

Organizers hope the festival will help revive local seafood demand. At a time when seafood consumption has been soft, the chance to taste and experience fresh, locally sourced products could spark renewed interest and sales.

Lee Sun-hee, head of the PR team, said, “The festival got off to a richer start thanks to so many tourists and county residents. We will do our best to run the event safely and make sure everyone enjoys it through the final day.”

Meanwhile, the Jeongnamjin Jangheung Pen Shell Festival has grown into a signature local attraction by blending seasonal seafood and regional specialties with hands-on experiences. It plays an important role in promoting Jangheung’s marine resources and culinary tourism across the country.
