On the 4th, SBS’s Live Today rolled out a lineup of segments — Open RUN, Law Talk, Big Eater, and Today ISSUE. In the Big Eater portion, the program ran two eye-catching features back-to-back: a grandmillennial-style straw-fire, open-flame cooking episode and a profile of a legendary restorative dish once enjoyed by emperors, spotlighting two standout restaurants.

Live Today airs weekday evenings on SBS. The live infotainment program asks, \”What’s happening around us right now?\” and covers trending incidents, human-interest stories that tug at the heart, and food features that catch hungry evening viewers’ attention. The Big Eater segment, especially, highlights quirky, can’t-miss eateries from across the country and consistently draws food lovers.

Grandmillennial Straw-Fire Open-Flame Cooking — Hyehwahwa in Hyehwa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul

The first stop on Big Eater was Hyehwahwa, tucked into Hyehwa-dong in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Known for inventive bar snacks, the restaurant modernizes the traditional straw-fire direct-grill technique with contemporary flair.

Hyehwahwa’s signature is a spicy stew featuring whole gopchang (grilled intestines) seared over straw, joined by rice cakes, glass noodles, and potatoes. The menu also offers a straw-fire par-grilled cauldron-style spicy sliced-octopus bibim noodles, garlic-charred pork neck barbecue and boiled pork, and straw-scented blanched octopus — a tempting lineup for adventurous diners.

Visitors have been enthusiastic. Naver reviews praise a menu full of items you won’t find elsewhere and a wide drink selection. Comments include: \”So fresh and delicious,\” \”Highly recommend both the smoky kall-nakji and the generously portioned yukhoe bibimbap,\” and \”I always stop by when I’m in Hyehwa.\”

The Hyehwa-dong area itself has a distinct vibe. Adjacent to the Hyehwa rotary, Daehangno is a cultural arts street packed with theaters and arts organizations that stage plays and musicals. For anyone grabbing a bite after a show, Hyehwahwa offers an intriguing option.

Hyehwahwa is open daily from 5:00 PM until 1:00 AM the next morning. It is closed on Tuesdays.

Legendary Restorative Dish Once Eaten by Emperors — Donggyeong Malgeun Trout Suwon Sashimi House in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province

The second feature in the Big Eater segment visited Donggyeong Malgeun Trout Suwon Sashimi House in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. As the name suggests, the restaurant specializes in trout and serves it in many forms — from trout sashimi and tempura to multi-course meals and sashimi rice bowls.

Trout has long been prized as a restorative food and is known to live only in very clean, first-grade water. Nutritionally, trout is low in calories, high in protein, and low in fat, while being rich in calcium and vitamins. It contains taurine and anserine, which can help with fatigue recovery, and provides minerals and unsaturated fatty acids that support immunity and metabolism. Trout can aid brain development in growing children and may help with dementia prevention in older adults.

Guests at Donggyeong Malgeun Trout praised the freshness. Naver reviewers wrote things like: \”Ingredients are fresh and clean; the side dishes are tidy, and the spicy fish stew is refreshing and mild — a flavor I’d want often,\” \”My elders loved it when I brought them here,\” and \”The trout is so fresh there’s no fishy taste; it’s clean and chewy, and mixed with vegetables it’s even nuttier. From the first bite everyone said, ‘Why is this so tender?’\” If you’re looking for a healthy restorative meal the whole family can enjoy, this place is a solid option.

Donggyeong Malgeun Trout Suwon Sashimi House is open daily from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM and is closed on Mondays.

Both restaurants are likely to see continued interest from food enthusiasts following the broadcast. Live Today airs Monday through Friday at 6:00 PM on SBS.
