A post on a Korean online community claims diners at a restaurant in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang, discovered a steel scouring pad and what appeared to be a sink drain cover in their food — and the story quickly sparked outrage.
On the 3rd, a user shared the post under the headline “Mungyeong Saejae Special: Sink Lid Doenjang-jjigae.”
The poster, identified only as A, says they and their family visited a nearby restaurant after attending the Mungyeong Saejae festival and ordered a salted mackerel set and a bowl of doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew).
According to A, the first dish — the salted mackerel — contained a piece of steel scouring pad. When they alerted the owner, he offered to remake the dish. A declined, and the owner went into the kitchen saying he would deduct the item from the bill.
Later, A says they found another foreign object in the doenjang-jjigae: what looked like a sink drain cover. The photos A posted show a round metal disk sitting inside the earthenware pot of soybean-paste stew.
A says they complained again, but the owner reportedly told them, “Don’t pay — just leave. If you get sick, file a claim.” A alleges that when they pressed the issue, the restaurant posted a sign outside reading “All seats reserved.” After A and their family left, the sign was removed and the restaurant resumed normal service.
Online commenters reacted with outrage, urging the poster to report the incident to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and calling the situation “unbelievable” and in need of public attention.
If you find a foreign object in your food, you can report it through Food Safety Korea, the reporting system operated by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Submitting photos or video evidence can prompt an investigation that may result in corrective orders or temporary business suspension, depending on the findings.
