With prices soaring, splurging on a traditional engagement ring has become a real stretch. So when one partner proposed with a literal pile of gem rough — a 45kg (about 100 lb) heap of sapphire pebbles — the gesture felt equal parts clever and romantic, instantly capturing global attention.

A giant gift from the mine… a proposal that involved digging for gems together

On Reddit, a woman recently shared that her boyfriend proposed by gifting her a heap of sapphire rough weighing roughly 100 pounds (about 45kg).

Instead of buying a finished, branded stone, he ordered an entire batch of freshly mined rough straight from a Montana mine and presented it as a single, unforgettable gift.

They turned the moment into an experience: family and friends were invited to sift through the pebbles and hunt for sapphires alongside the couple.

Sorting through the dust and uncovering hidden gems became, in itself, a joyful celebration of their upcoming marriage.

Found 105 stones including a 4-carat gem… they saved money and added meaning

The effort paid off. The couple uncovered 105 sapphire stones in total, selected 43 higher-value pieces, and had them heat-treated. Among the finds was an impressive roughly 4-carat stone that surprised everyone.

The poster said she plans to pick the prettiest stones from the lot and set them into rings she designs herself, and she shared how happy that made her.

With average engagement-ring spending in the U.S. hovering around 10 million KRW (about $7,500), many readers praised the couple’s approach as both economical and heartfelt.

Comments flooded in calling it far more romantic than a multi-million KRW designer ring and noting that the leftover sapphires could be turned into other pieces — essentially calling it a smart, sentimental investment.
