Kim Kyung-nam is set to undergo another transformation in SBS’s upcoming Friday-Saturday drama “Shin Ilang Law Office,” taking on the role of Yang Do-kyung, a character driven by ambition and desire.
Premiering on the 13th, “Shin Ilang Law Office” follows the unconventional partnership between Shin Ilang, a “possessed lawyer” who dramatically resolves the grudges of the deceased, and Han Na-hyun, a ruthless elite attorney who stakes everything on winning. Their unlikely alliance creates a unique and heartwarming revenge adventure.
Kim portrays Yang Do-kyung, the head of the prestigious Taebaek law firm. Do-kyung is described as a man consumed by ambition and desire, who has climbed to the top through sheer determination and competitiveness. His intense dislike for losing means he leaves no room for error in his pursuits.
This personality is reflected in Do-kyung’s appearance. Kim explained that to fit the character of a young firm leader, they dressed him in sharp three-piece suits but chose bold colors to visually represent Do-kyung’s unpredictable nature. His hair was dyed brown to complete the look of an alternative executive image. The styling strikes a balance between rigidity and volatility, simultaneously expressing Do-kyung’s drive and inner turmoil.
However, Kim emphasizes that Do-kyung is more than just an ambitious figure. While driven by desire and ambition, he’s not a one-dimensional character. “I wanted to show his vulnerabilities,” Kim said. He aimed to reveal moments where the character’s composure slips, exposing the cracks in his facade.
These cracks begin to widen with the unexpected arrival of an unfamiliar lawyer: Shin Ilang (played by Yoo Yeon-seok). Shin’s unconventional approach to cases disrupts Do-kyung’s carefully constructed world. The unfamiliar taste of potential defeat directly challenges Do-kyung’s pride, naturally positioning the two as adversaries.
Interestingly, there’s one person who can penetrate Do-kyung’s tough exterior: his partner Han Na-hyun (Lee Som). Kim hinted, “He softens around Han Na-hyun and often swallows his pride for her.” He added, “While it’s not exactly a love triangle, Do-kyung feels a rational attraction to Han Na-hyun and jealousy towards Shin Ilang.” Do-kyung’s position between Shin Ilang’s emotional instincts and Han Na-hyun’s cold logic creates a complex dynamic that promises to add fresh tension to the story.
Kim was drawn to the project because of this complexity. “Each episode’s stories were intriguing, and I felt the drama could appeal to viewers of all ages,” he said. The genre’s freshness and the evolving relationships throughout the series sparked his desire for a new acting challenge.
As the series unfolds, viewers will see how Kim brings to life the multifaceted Yang Do-kyung, a character torn between desire, ambition, jealousy, and emotional vulnerability. Kim concluded by saying, “I believe this will be a groundbreaking new genre unlike anything we’ve seen before. I hope viewers will enjoy the diverse episodes and compelling characters. Please show your support for our show.”
