KakaoTV Calls It Quits After Nine-Year Run
Kakao announced on Friday that its popular streaming platform, KakaoTV, will cease operations on June 30, 2026, marking the end of a nine-year journey. The decision comes as a response to the rapidly evolving content market and changing operational landscape.
Since its inception in 2017, KakaoTV has strived to create a space where creators and viewers could share everyday joys and engage in meaningful interactions. However, the company stated that after careful deliberation, they’ve made the difficult choice to discontinue the service.
In a statement tinged with regret, Kakao expressed gratitude to its loyal users and promised to provide a detailed timeline for the shutdown process. Users will have the opportunity to back up their uploaded videos from 2 p.m. on March 9 until the service’s final day. The platform will stop accepting new channel creations and video uploads starting June 1, with the complete shutdown scheduled for June 30.
KakaoTV, which began as part of the Daum video platform, underwent several iterations before reaching its current form. Industry analysts suggest that the decision to shutter the service may be largely attributed to the overwhelming dominance of YouTube in the global video streaming market.
As the curtain falls on KakaoTV, Kakao has pledged to manage the transition with utmost care and responsibility, aiming to minimize inconvenience for its user base until the very end. The company’s spokesperson emphasized their commitment to ensuring a smooth closure process for all stakeholders involved.
