[Sports Today reporter Lim Si-ryeong] Actress Jeon Mi-do has vaulted into the ranks of performers whose films have drawn more than 10 million moviegoers with her first commercial leading role. After a long career on the musical and theater stages and successful turns on television, Jeon’s leap to the big screen culminated as The Man Who Lives with the King surpassed 12 million admissions.
The Man Who Lives with the King opened on Feb. 4 and reached 10 million admissions on March 6, then crossed the 12 million mark on March 11. It is the first film to reach the 10-million milestone since Crime City 4 opened in April 2024, cementing its status as this year’s biggest box-office success. Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, the film centers on a village chief who chooses exile to revive his hometown and a young deposed king sent into banishment; the period drama delivered a powerful, resonant story that struck a chord with audiences.
The film is especially meaningful as Jeon Mi-do’s first commercial feature in a starring role. She plays Maehwa, a court lady who quietly remains at the young king’s side. Jeon rendered the character with subtle precision, anchoring the film’s emotional core and heightening audience engagement.
From nuanced, small gestures of genuine concern for the young monarch to dynamic back-and-forth chemistry with Yoo Hae-jin, Jeon moved effortlessly between sorrow and anger. Her controlled emotional range and steady presence deepened the film’s immersion and drew strong empathy from viewers.
Yoo Hae-jin praised her work, saying, “The ad-libs she prepared fit the film’s flow and are things Maehwa would naturally say. They added a lot of richness.” Director Jang Hang-jun added, “When people watch Yoo Hae-jin and Jeon Mi-do perform, they smile. Their chemistry was fantastic. As a director, that makes me very happy.” In a press interview, Yoo Ji-tae named Jeon Mi-do as an actor he’d like to work with again, saying, “She brings great energy. I’d love to collaborate with her again.”
The praise from audiences, directors and fellow actors marks a major milestone in Jeon Mi-do’s career. She honed her craft for years on stage, earning recognition in hit productions such as the musical Maybe Happy Ending and the play Oslo. Her solid theatrical foundation and acclaimed performances established her credibility as an actor. She later gained broad public recognition through tvN’s Hospital Playlist series, where her warm, realistic portrayals resonated widely and expanded her range.
Combining deep stage experience, proven television popularity and now major box-office success, Jeon Mi-do has reinforced her reputation as a reliably compelling performer. With her first commercial lead surpassing 12 million admissions, she has firmly positioned herself as a talent to watch in the film world.
