[Sports Today Reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Actress Moon Geun-young broke a nine-year absence with a commanding return to the stage in Lyle Kessler’s Orphans.

On the 13th, Moon — who takes on the role of Treat in Orphans — dominated opening night, delivering a fully realized, deeply embodied performance that held the audience rapt.

The production drew early attention as Moon’s first theater appearance in nine years. Onstage, she showcased a level of craft that made her hiatus feel inconsequential.

Lyle Kessler’s Orphans follows middle-aged gangster Harold and orphaned brothers Treat and Philip as an uneasy cohabitation slowly becomes a surrogate family. Treat, Moon’s character, is layered: he resorts to brutal violence to shield his brother, while beneath that exterior he wrestles with deprivation and a heavy sense of responsibility.

That night Moon moved seamlessly between jagged charisma and childlike vulnerability, tracing Treat’s complex emotional arc with precision. Her rapport with Kim Dan-i, who plays Philip, produced taut but warm brotherly moments that brought laughs, while her scenes opposite Yang So-min’s Harold depicted Treat’s gradual breakdown and eventual healing with heartrending clarity, reducing many in the audience to tears. Her explosive energy and earnest focus filled the stage and earned sustained applause.

After the successful opening, Moon told her agency, \”I was anxious about returning to the stage after such a long time, but thanks to the audience who shared the performance with us, we were able to finish safely without incident. I’m truly relieved and grateful.\” She added, \”This is just the beginning. I’ll give my all through the final performance, so please keep supporting us,\” underscoring her deep commitment to the production.

Moon has consistently expanded her range — across television and film, in her work as a director, and with a bold transformation in Netflix’s Hellbound Season 2 — and with Orphans she reaffirmed why she remains a trusted draw. More than a comeback, she demonstrated an essential depth as an actor, earning praise from critics and audiences alike.

Orphans, featuring Moon’s intense turn, runs at Daehak-ro TioM through May 31.
