[Sports Today Reporter Jeong Ye-won] ‘Doctor Shin’ launched with a commanding, immersive narrative in its premiere, heralding a fresh chapter for Phoebe (Im Sung-han) as she tries her hand at a medical thriller.
In episode 1 of TV CHOSUN’s new weekend miniseries ‘Doctor Shin,’ which aired on the 14th, genius neurosurgeon Shin Ju-shin (Jung Yi-chan) — renowned for near-miraculous brain surgery — begins a fateful romance with top actress Momo (Baek Seora). Their budding connection is abruptly interrupted when Momo is badly injured in an accident. The episode also introduced a web of intertwined relationships: reporter Geum Ba-ra (Joo Se-bin), who grows close to Momo while covering her; Ha Yong-jung (Ahn Woo-yeon), who shares a bittersweet childhood history with Geum; and Momo’s stylist Kim Jin-ju (Cheon Young-min).
The episode opens with Shin fully absorbed in an operation, while Momo — who had gone scuba diving — loses consciousness after an accident and is rushed to Shin’s hospital. At the same time, Geum is stood up at a planned meeting with Momo and heads home; Kim Jin-ju, waiting outside Geum’s house, delivers the news of Momo’s accident and warns Geum to keep the matter private.
The narrative then flashes back six months to show Geum meeting Ha Yong-jung for an interview. As she studies Ha, Geum recalls Ji An-hee (Cha Ji-hyeok), who cared for her like an older brother at the orphanage, and the warmth Ha once showed her. Despite those memories, Ha fails to recognize Geum by the end of their interview, and she conceals her disappointment. Meanwhile, after seeing Momo’s intense, unhinged performance in a TV drama, Shin is smitten and asks his friend Ha’s older brother, James (Jeon No-min), to set up a meeting. At that encounter, Momo declines dinner because of a reshoot and brusquely rejects Shin’s follow-up invitation, saying, “I’m not as charming as that character in the drama.”
Six months after the accident, Momo lies in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber in a deep sleep, heightening the story’s pathos. Momo’s mother, Hyun Ran-hee (Song Ji-in), visits Shin and mentions a “brain change” she heard about from Shin’s father. When Shin says there is no one to transfer the brain to, Hyun points to herself and says, “Me.” Worried about surgical risks, Shin hesitates, but Hyun presses him: “Just move the brain to me. Keep the eyes, nose and mouth the same. This is what a mother wants.” The episode closes with Momo and Hyun on the operating table as hair is shaved away, and Shin—remembering happier moments with Momo—picks up a scalpel and begins the brain surgery, leaving viewers eager for the shocking developments ahead.
Episode 2 of ‘Doctor Shin’ will premiere simultaneously on TV CHOSUN and Coupang Play at 10:30 p.m. on the 15th.
