[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] The gates to a 21st-century constitutional monarchy in South Korea are opening, and the story centers on IU, Byeon Woo-seok, Noh Sang-hyun and Gong Seung-yeon.
MBC has released a group poster for its new Friday–Saturday drama, 21st Century Daegunbuin, which premieres April 10. The image, highlighting the power players who sustain politics, business and the royal household, is already stirring interest.
The poster presents chaebol heiress Seong Hee-joo (IU), the royal family’s second son Prince Ian (Byeon Woo-seok), Prime Minister Min Jung-woo (Noh Sang-hyun) and Queen Dowager Yoon I-rang (Gong Seung-yeon) in composed, elegant poses. Set before an Ilwol Obongdo folding screen, the four figures each adopt distinct stances that hint at their personalities and stakes.
At the center are Seong Hee-joo and Prince Ian. Seong Hee-joo, the only commoner among them, rests her arm lightly on the prince’s shoulder. Prince Ian — the younger royal who never ascended the throne — leans subtly toward her. Their marriage began as a contract meant to alter their fates, but the poster suggests a deeper reliance between them under the label of husband and wife.
Prime Minister Min Jung-woo and Queen Dowager Yoon I-rang stand with rigid poise, gazing forward and projecting formidable charisma. Because Seong Hee-joo and Prince Ian’s union is likely to reshape both political and personal landscapes, the dynamics among these four characters are especially compelling.
The poster also showcases the series’ distinctive aesthetic. Bonsai, ceramics, glass lighting and door frames—objects that blend tradition and modern design—promise a royal visual world where past and present intersect.
With its focus on the varied expressions of Seong Hee-joo, Prince Ian, Min and Yoon, 21st Century Daegunbuin hints at unpredictable power struggles and emotional conflicts. Viewers will be left wondering whether these four, standing together beneath the weight of fate, can achieve the goals they pursue.
