[Sports Today reporter Jeong Ye-won] Netflix series ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ has become a global hit — and that popularity appears to have led some viewers in China to turn to unauthorized streams to watch the show.
On Douban, China’s largest review platform, a page for ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ had attracted roughly 7,000 star ratings and about 3,500 written reviews as of the 17th. Because Netflix does not officially operate in China, those ratings and reviews appear to come from people who watched the series through illegal channels.
Netflix reports that ‘Monthly Boyfriend’ rose to No. 4 on its Global Weekly Top 10 for non-English TV within three days of release. The series also entered the top 10 in 34 countries — including Singapore, Hong Kong, Mexico, Indonesia, Brazil and Chile — quickly drawing an international audience.
Seo Kyung-deok, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University, said that illegal viewing has effectively become routine in China. “What’s most striking is the apparent lack of shame,” he said, urging Chinese authorities to take immediate action. He called on officials to publicly address the problems caused by citizens’ illicit behavior and to implement measures that prevent similar incidents from happening again.
