[Sports Today reporter Lim Si-ryeong] Actor Lee Jae-ryong, accused of fleeing the scene after a drunk-driving crash, has been referred to prosecutors.
On March 18, Yonhap News and other outlets reported that Seoul’s Gangnam Police Station transferred Lee to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office without detention on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act — including drunk driving, failure to render aid after an accident, and obstructing an alcohol test.
Authorities allege Lee engaged in the so-called “sultagi” tactic — drinking more after fleeing the scene to confuse his blood-alcohol reading. Lee has apologized for driving under the influence but denied the sultagi allegation, saying he had only one small serving of distilled liquor in a beer glass and that the gathering was prearranged.
Police summoned Lee as a suspect, questioned him, and concluded he attempted the sultagi method, adding the charge of obstructing an alcohol test. Investigators also questioned those who were with him about the circumstances of the drinking and say they believe Lee tried to eliminate evidence of drunk driving using that method.
On the night of the 6th, at around 11:00 p.m., Lee struck a center divider near Samseong Jungang Station on Seoul Subway Line 9 and fled. He later parked the car at his home, went to an acquaintance’s house, and was arrested by police at about 2:00 a.m. on the 7th. Officials said his blood-alcohol concentration was at a level that would lead to a license suspension.
