By Lee Young-sil, SisaWeek The film A Man Living with the King has crossed the 14 million admissions mark, rewriting box-office records in South Korea.
On March 20, distributor Showbox said the film surpassed 14 million cumulative admissions on Korea’s integrated box-office tracking system that morning. The milestone came on its 45th day in theaters.
With the new total, A Man Living with the King has overtaken Avengers: Endgame (2019, 13.97 million admissions) to move into fifth place on the all-time list. It is the fifth domestic release to pass 14 million admissions, following The Admiral: Roaring Currents (2014, 17.61 million), Extreme Job (2019, 16.26 million), Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (14.41 million) and Ode to My Father (2014, 14.26 million).
Given its current momentum, the film could continue to climb. As of 5:40 p.m. that day, roughly 162,000 advance tickets had been sold, keeping the title near the top of pre-sale charts and putting a 15 million total well within reach.
Released on Feb. 4, A Man Living with the King sustained a long theatrical run and became this year’s first film to surpass 10 million admissions on March 6 — the 34th film overall and the 25th Korean title to hit the 10 million mark. It has continued to draw audiences steadily and now stands at 14 million admissions.
Set in 1457 at Cheongnyeongpo, A Man Living with the King follows a village chief who volunteers for exile to revive his hometown and a young, deposed monarch also sent into exile. The film offers a fresh perspective on the familiar tragedy of King Danjong. Director Jang Hang-jun helms the project, with performances from Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae and Jeon Mi-do.
