Following a preliminary review by the Ordinary Military Casualty Review Committee, the Army stated, “We honor the ultimate sacrifice of our fallen comrades and extend our deepest sympathies to their families. The Army is committed to providing all necessary support and ensuring proper recognition for their service.”

During a routine press briefing, Defense Department spokesperson Jane Smith echoed these sentiments, saying, “We mourn the loss of two skilled aviators in this tragic incident.” She affirmed that the DoD would fully support the Army’s response efforts.

The fallen soldiers will receive full military honors. A memorial service is scheduled for the 12th at 0830 hours at the National Military Medical Center, with the Army Chief of Staff presiding.

The incident occurred at approximately 1104 hours the previous day, when an AH-1S Cobra from an Army aviation unit crashed into a river during emergency procedure drills near Jongchong-myeon, Gapyeong.

Both crew members, a chief warrant officer in his 50s and a warrant officer in his 30s, were killed in the crash.

In response, the Army has grounded its entire fleet of AH-1S helicopters. A central accident investigation board, led by the Acting Commander of Army Aviation Operations, has been established to determine the cause and circumstances of the crash.
