NAEPO — Chungcheongnam-do Province has joined forces with global aviation, defense, and space industry leaders as it continues to promote the development of the future aviation sector in Taean’s Cheonsu Bay.

Governor Kim Tae-heum inked the agreement on February 10 at the Taean Cultural and Arts Center. The signing ceremony was attended by National Assembly member Seong Il-jong, Defense Science Research Institute Deputy Director Lee Jeong-seok, and representatives from four major industry players: Korean Air, LIG Nex1, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and Hanwha Aerospace.

The agreement aims to establish a strategic hub for the future aviation industry and generate new regional growth drivers. It builds on the business support infrastructure linked to the Defense Future Aviation Research Center, which is slated for construction in Taean’s Cheonsu Bay B district.

Under the terms of the agreement, the participating entities will focus on three key areas: 1) Developing research and business support infrastructure, including the Defense Future Aviation Research Center; 2) Facilitating collaboration between central and local governments and businesses for smooth project execution; and 3) Securing both public and private investment funding.

The province will also work on developing specialized industrial complexes tied to the research center, improving local infrastructure and living conditions, and ensuring stable utilities to attract businesses. Additionally, it will provide administrative and financial support for corporate investments.

The Defense Science Research Institute has committed to swiftly establishing the necessary research infrastructure and actively supporting related companies in setting up operations in the area.

National Assembly members representing Seosan and Taean will work to secure federal funding for the rapid development of the research center, specialized industrial complexes, and transportation infrastructure. They will also provide legislative and policy support to streamline regulations and revise relevant laws to facilitate industry growth.

The four corporate partners, led by Korean Air, plan to leverage this support to establish a hub for future aviation research, testing, and manufacturing near the Defense Future Aviation Research Center. They will explore new investment opportunities to boost local job creation and drive industrial advancement in the region.

The Defense Future Aviation Research Center, a cornerstone of this initiative, will be constructed in Taean’s Cheonsu Bay B district with an investment of 329.4 billion KRW (approximately 247.05 million USD) between now and 2032.

Once operational, the center will serve as a consolidated facility for the Defense Science Research Institute’s drone research and development efforts, which are currently scattered across the country. It will function as a comprehensive research and testing facility for aviation technologies, with a focus on unmanned aerial systems.

Governor Kim Tae-heum emphasized the importance of this collaborative effort, stating, “To truly foster the future aviation industry, we need to go beyond just establishing the research center. We must create an industrial ecosystem where major corporations and their partners can thrive together.” He urged stakeholders to actively invest in Taean’s potential as a hub for aviation innovation.
