[Military Times | Staff Writer] Kang Won-rae, a former member of the popular South Korean group Clon, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding military service points in his home country.

On February 8, Kang took to social media to share his perspective, posting photos from his time in the military along with his dog tags. He expressed his unease with the online discussions about the pros and cons of awarding points for military service.

Kang revealed, “In January 1991, at the height of our careers, my bandmate Koo Jun-yup and I enlisted for active duty, serving the full 30-month term. Despite living in the affluent Gangnam area and being university students, we were classified as first-class active duty soldiers due to our good health.”

He went on to note that many of his contemporaries in the entertainment industry managed to avoid military service through various exemptions, citing reasons such as financial hardship, educational circumstances, foreign citizenship, health issues, or mental health concerns. Kang pointed out the stark contrast: while he and others like him were defending their country, those who avoided service continued to enjoy success in the entertainment industry, even being praised as ‘cultural trendsetters.’

Kang concluded his post with a poignant question: “Do those who avoided service truly appreciate the sacrifice we made in fulfilling our national defense obligations on their behalf?”

Kang Won-rae first gained fame in 1990 as part of the duo Wawa with Hyun Jin-young. In 1996, he formed Clon with Koo Jun-yup, achieving massive success with hits like ‘Choryeon,’ ‘Kkungttari Shabara,’ ‘Escape from the City,’ and ‘Funky Tonight.’

Clon’s popularity extended beyond South Korea, particularly in Taiwan and other Asian markets, making them early pioneers of the Korean Wave. Tragically, on November 9, 2000, Kang’s career was cut short when he was involved in a motorcycle accident with a vehicle making an illegal U-turn, resulting in lower body paralysis. In 2003, he married singer Kim Song, and the couple has one son.
