Hanwha Aerospace and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) have joined forces to develop indigenous long-range air-to-air missiles and other aviation armaments for domestically produced aircraft.

This partnership aims to collaborate on technology development and spearhead joint marketing initiatives to boost exports of aircraft like the KF-21 and FA-50, along with their associated weaponry.

During the 3rd World Defense Show (WDS) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the 9th (local time), Hanwha Aerospace announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KAI for cooperation in aviation armament business.

The MOU signing ceremony, held at the Hanwha booth, was attended by key figures from both companies, including Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il and KAI CEO Cha Jae-byeong.

The MOU outlines agreements for integrating aviation armaments into the KF-21 and FA-50 aircraft platforms and conducting joint marketing efforts to promote aircraft and armament exports.

Both firms are committed to executing the aviation armament development project, led by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), to achieve world-class technological capabilities.

Hanwha Aerospace has been at the forefront of advanced research, focusing on cutting-edge technologies such as ducted solid ramjet engines for long-range air-to-air missiles and supersonic air-to-ground and air-to-ship missiles.

KAI CEO Cha Jae-byeong noted, “With the growing reputation of Korean defense products, international customers are now seeking complete Korean-made operational systems, not just aircraft platforms. Our domestic defense companies will unite in joint marketing efforts to expand K-defense exports.”

Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il expressed confidence in achieving domestic aviation armament development goals through the synergy of their missile development expertise and KAI’s fighter system integration capabilities. He added, “This collaboration will enhance our ability to defend South Korean airspace and build trust with global customers, driving sustainable growth in the K-defense sector.”
