The proposed military drone test runway in Taean has ignited a heated debate among politicians and local residents.
In his statement, Jo emphasized the need to “fundamentally reassess the military drone runway construction project from square one.”
Jo criticized Congressman Seong Il-jong and the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) for attempting to legitimize the project through a non-binding MOU. He argued that pushing for large-scale military installations without proper community consultation is deeply problematic.
“The concept of constructing a military runway just 2.7 km from Taean’s tourist gateway and near a cultural tourism business district is at odds with the area’s identity,” Jo stated. He expressed concerns about potential infringements on residents’ quality of life and property rights due to noise pollution, safety risks, and environmental impacts.
Jo demanded that the ADD provide transparent information to the public, including details on the types of aircraft to be operated, projected noise levels, the extent of military protection zones, and building height restrictions. “This isn’t merely a development issue; it directly impacts our constituents’ daily lives,” he added.
The chairman also criticized the promotion of the project’s necessity based on the MOU, despite the absence of concrete business attraction plans. “This only serves to confuse residents and must be seen as an attempt to manipulate public opinion ahead of elections,” he asserted.
This statement has elevated the military drone runway project to a contentious issue, pitting national security interests against the protection of local residents’ rights. All eyes are now on how the ADD and related agencies will address community concerns and share information moving forward.
