SK Ocean Plant inks ship repair deal with U.S. Navy

SK Ocean Plant has officially signed a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) with the U.S. Navy, the company announced on Tuesday. This agreement qualifies SK Ocean Plant to participate in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) projects for key U.S. naval vessels, including combat ships.
The MSRA signing marks a significant milestone in SK Ocean Plant’s global ship MRO expansion strategy, which has been in the works since last year. The company cleared the final hurdle in January after successfully passing the port security assessment conducted by the U.S. Navy Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP).
An MSRA is an official certification granted by the U.S. Navy to domestic and allied shipyards. This certification authorizes shipyards to directly engage in MRO projects for major naval vessels, including frontline warships. By securing this agreement, SK Ocean Plant has gained international recognition for its high-level expertise in naval defense and maritime maintenance.
SK Ocean Plant has been a key player in South Korea’s defense industry since 2017 when it was designated as a defense contractor for shipbuilding. The company has successfully delivered over 30 vessels to the ROK Navy and Coast Guard. Currently, it is simultaneously constructing three of the latest Ulsan-class Batch-III frigates. Beyond military contracts, SK Ocean Plant maintains a robust commercial portfolio, servicing more than 30 merchant vessels annually. This includes work on a 430-meter ultra-large floating dock, LNG carriers, Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), and large container ships, solidifying its position as an emerging global leader in ship MRO services.
