President Lee Jae-myung engaged in discussions with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg regarding potential avenues for enhancing cooperation between South Korea and NATO.

Blue House spokesperson Kim Nam-joon issued a written statement on the 10th, confirming that President Lee had a phone conversation with Secretary General Stoltenberg that afternoon. The call, initiated at NATO’s request, marked their first dialogue in approximately seven months since their initial discussion in July of the previous year.

Both parties recognized the increasing interconnectedness of security landscapes in the Indo-Pacific region and Europe. They concurred on the importance of sustained collaboration between South Korea and NATO to effectively address global security challenges. Consequently, they committed to maintaining open lines of communication on pressing issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

President Lee specifically underscored South Korea’s robust defense industry capabilities, positioning the nation as an ideal defense partner for NATO member states. He proposed further solidifying defense cooperation through the recently established Korea-NATO Defense Industry Consultative Body, which was launched last year.

In response, Secretary General Stoltenberg commended South Korea’s defense industry prowess and pledged continued support for strengthening Korea-NATO defense cooperation.

In conclusion, both parties agreed to pursue efforts to deepen the Korea-NATO relationship across various domains, including defense, space exploration, and intelligence sharing.
