As the Russia-Ukraine conflict enters its fourth year with no end in sight, military analysts are calling for a strategic overhaul of Ukraine’s approach.

While Ukraine has focused on maximizing Russian casualties at the front lines, experts argue this tactic alone is insufficient to break the current deadlock.

Despite a slower offensive pace, Russian forces continue to employ human wave tactics at the front, wearing down Ukrainian defenders. Concurrently, Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s interior, causing additional damage through rear infiltration.

Newly appointed Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Podolyak’s announcement to increase monthly Russian casualty targets to 50,000 indicates a continued emphasis on frontline engagement.

While this stance demonstrates Ukraine’s resolve, military experts question its feasibility and effectiveness.

Analysts suggest Ukraine should develop mid-range strike capabilities to target Russian rear areas, mirroring Moscow’s tactics.

Russia’s Effective Rear Area Attacks

Russian forces have been consistently targeting Ukraine’s rear areas, inflicting significant damage on Ukrainian military assets and personnel.

Key targets include drone command centers, logistical hubs, and troops rotating in and out of the front lines.

A Ukrainian soldier reported high casualty rates during troop rotations, with Russian mid-range drones making movement between front lines extremely hazardous.

Major Oleh, defending Ukraine’s southern region, emphasized the need for Ukraine to adopt similar tactics, focusing on Russian rear targets such as drone operators, command posts, and supply facilities.

Ukraine’s Limited Capacity for Deep Strikes

Despite the strategic necessity, Ukraine currently lacks the operational capacity to effectively strike Russian rear positions. Austrian military analyst Franz Stefan Gardi noted that while Ukraine possesses skilled drone operators, its attacks on rear targets remain sporadic and limited.

Gardi stressed that to hit targets 20-120 miles (32-193 km) behind enemy lines, Ukraine requires additional drones and munitions, which are in short supply. He anticipates that further support from Western allies will be crucial.

Striking enemy rear areas can disrupt command structures and alleviate frontline pressure. To turn the tide of war, Ukraine must seriously consider adopting and expanding this multi-faceted strategy.
