Hanwha Aerospace and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) have announced a strategic partnership to develop indigenous aerospace armaments, including long-range air-to-air missiles, for integration with Korean-made aircraft. The collaboration extends to joint marketing initiatives aimed at expanding exports of both aircraft and weapons systems, with a focus on platforms such as the KF-21 fighter jet and FA-50 light combat aircraft.

On February 9, during the World Defense Show (WDS) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Hanwha Aerospace and KAI inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for aerospace armament cooperation. The signing ceremony was attended by key executives from both companies, including Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il and KAI CEO Cha Jae-byeong.

The partnership will focus on two main areas: integrating aerospace armament systems for the KF-21 and FA-50 aircraft platforms, and launching joint marketing campaigns to promote the export of both aircraft and weapons systems. By leveraging their combined expertise, the companies aim to successfully execute armament development projects led by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), with the goal of achieving global top-tier technological capabilities.

Hanwha Aerospace brings to the table its experience in conducting advanced research for ADD, particularly in the realm of cutting-edge propulsion technology. The company has been at the forefront of developing long-range air-to-air missiles and supersonic air-to-ground and anti-ship missiles utilizing ducted solid ramjet engines.

Son Jae-il, CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, expressed confidence in the partnership’s potential, stating, “By combining our extensive experience in missile development across various domains with KAI’s expertise in fighter aircraft systems integration, we are well-positioned to achieve our goal of developing world-class domestic aerospace armaments. This collaboration will not only enhance our ability to defend South Korean airspace but also bolster the credibility of our offerings to global customers, ultimately contributing to the sustainable growth of the K-defense industry.”
