The Office of National Security convened an emergency security review on the 14th after North Korea fired about 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea (Sea of Japan). The Defense Ministry, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other agencies attended.

At the meeting, officials reviewed the launches’ impact on national security and checked necessary response measures. The office called the launches a provocative violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and urged Pyongyang to halt them immediately.

The office also ordered relevant agencies to maintain a high state of readiness while the ongoing South Korea–U.S. joint exercises continue. Those drills are scheduled to conclude on the 19th.

The Office of National Security briefed President Lee Jae‑myung on the missile launches and the government’s planned response.

Earlier, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected roughly 10 unidentified ballistic missiles launched from the Sunan area toward the East Sea at about 1:20 p.m. The JCS said the missiles flew approximately 350 km and that South Korea and the United States are conducting a detailed analysis of their characteristics.

This was North Korea’s first ballistic missile launch into the East Sea since Jan. 27 — 47 days earlier — and the third such launch this year. Firing about 10 missiles simultaneously is highly unusual.
