On March 14, the National Security Office convened an emergency security review after North Korea launched roughly 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea (Sea of Japan). Officials from the Defense Ministry, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other agencies attended.

The office said the meeting assessed the launches’ impact on South Korea’s security and reviewed the necessary response measures.

It added that the launches violated U.N. Security Council resolutions and called on Pyongyang to cease immediately.

Noting that the incident occurred during ongoing U.S.-South Korea joint exercises (March 9–19), the office ordered agencies to maintain heightened readiness.

The office also briefed President Lee Jae-myung on the situation and the steps being taken in response.

Earlier, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that at about 1:20 p.m., forces detected roughly 10 unidentified ballistic missiles launched from the Sunan area toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan). The missiles flew about 350 kilometers (approximately 217 miles). South Korean and U.S. analysts are conducting a detailed analysis to determine their exact specifications.

The launches were the first into the East Sea since Jan. 27 — 47 days earlier — and marked North Korea’s third such launch this year. Firing about 10 missiles simultaneously is unusual and appears intended as a show of force.
