President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on March 13 (local time), saying, “Iran is totally defeated and wants a deal,” but adding, “but it is not a deal I can accept.”
He accused the “fake news” media of refusing to report how effectively U.S. forces have operated against Iran.
Trump’s comments came shortly after U.S. strikes on Kharg Island, a key transit point for Iranian oil exports.
In a post immediately after the strike, he urged, “Iran’s military and everyone tied to this terror regime should lay down their weapons and stay in their country to protect what’s left,” pressing Tehran to surrender.
That day, U.S. forces said they struck Kharg Island to blunt what they described as Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and announced plans to begin escorting oil tankers. Kharg handles roughly 90% of Iran’s seaborne oil exports and is a major revenue channel for the country’s war efforts.
