The Israeli military said it struck an airport in downtown Tehran and destroyed the private plane of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the initial blasts.
On March 16 (local time), the Israeli Air Force posted on social media that it had struck Mehrabad Airport in Tehran and destroyed the aircraft used by Khamenei, whom it described as the head of Iran’s \”terror regime.\”
The Air Force said the aircraft routinely carried Khamenei as well as senior regime officials and military leaders on domestic and international trips.
It also alleged the plane had been used for covert flights to coordinate military operations with proxy groups in the so‑called \”axis of resistance,\” and to procure overseas military supplies and strategic components.
The Air Force said destroying the plane will seriously disrupt coordination between Iran’s leadership and its allies, and that the strike significantly degraded the regime’s command-and-control capabilities and its ability to rebuild militarily.
Ayatollah Khamenei was killed by U.S. and Israeli strikes on the first day of the war, Feb. 28, and Iran has since selected his second son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader.
