The Blue House said March 16 that President Lee Jae‑myung and First Lady Kim Hye‑kyung flew aboard the newly introduced presidential aircraft, Air Force No. 2, for the first time while attending the 66th anniversary ceremony of the March 15 Uprising in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.

Before boarding, the presidential couple received a briefing on the new aircraft from the Presidential Security Service and posed for commemorative photos with staff.

The president typically uses the Air Force No. 1 aircraft for overseas trips, but he boards the smaller No. 2 for travel within Asia or for domestic flights.

While designated as the presidential transport, No. 2 has also been used by other government delegations, including the prime minister.

The previous No. 2 entered service in 1985 and operated for about 40 years. In July 2018, the National Security Council’s standing committee approved acquisition of a replacement.

The new No. 2 offers improved cruise speed and extended range, enabling nonstop flights to key destinations such as Indonesia and Uzbekistan without refueling.

Designers retained the Taegeuk motif used on the prior presidential aircraft. Officials said the \”Republic of Korea\” lettering on the fuselage draws on the woodblock type from Yongbieocheonga, Korea’s earliest literary work, and the typeface used in the 1919 Korean Declaration of Independence.

The Blue House said the aircraft will serve as the presidential transport for the next 5 years, supporting the president’s domestic and international travel and other major state duties.
